Abstract

In search of an understanding of the professional football scenario in the brazilian State of Minas Gerais, this article presents information collected in primary research, with interviews carried out with leaders of 12 of the main football clubs of Minas Gerais in 2020. The reasoning is that only with a broad understanding of what revolves around football, it will be possible to find progress and complete and viable solutions. The scope of the research included listening to clubs of different sizes about structure, needs, finances, youth categories, women's football, the Minas Gerais Football Federation, State Sports Court of Justice, legal area, Campeonato Mineiro (State Championship), reference clubs and rivalries. The priority was to interview clubs from Module I of the 2020 Minas Gerais Football Championship, with a complement of clubs from Module II, to analyze the first level of professional football in the State. The results present clubs' financial difficulties, questions about the viability of clubs and competitions, the order of value among the competencies of the football universe, the shortcomings in marketing, what is expected from organizing institutions and what are the desires of clubs in Belo Horizonte, the main clubs in the State, who regularly play in the elite of brazilian football, and clubs from the interior, which rarely feature in the country's major competitions. The analyzes separate the views of directors of the big clubs in some aspects and it is noteworthy that in others there is no distinction in the analysis, so that the opinions were, on certain occasions, similar. The clubs researched were associations, with just one exception, at a time when management alternatives are much debated. The systemic view of the universe surrounding football is recognized, but the areas closest to the playing field are considered the most important. Clubs' revenues are essentially obtained from football and, therefore, the lack of professionals and marketing and communication skills are those most felt by clubs. The structures for the field and training are greatly missed by the clubs, including the difficulty of maintenance. Although in many cases criticism from the press or fans, including on social media, attracts more attention than praise, evaluations of the Minas Gerais Football Federation, the Minas Gerais Football Championship and the Minas Gerais Football Court of Justice are positive among this audience of management professionals. The prospects for growth in clubs' participation in women's football are stated as an intention of professionals.
